How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Southwest RAC develops recommendations for BLM with respect to the land use planning, classification, retention, management, and disposal of the public lands within the area for which the advisory council is established and such other matters as may be referred to it by the DFO.
How is membership balanced?*The Southwest RAC is composed of 15 members balanced among the following groups and within those groups: Category I includes those holding Federal grazing permits or leases, interests associated with transportation or rights-of-way, developed outdoor recreation, OHV users, or commercial recreation activities, commercial timber industry or energy and mineral development; Category II includes nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, dispersed recreation activities, archaeological and historical interests or nationally or regionally recognized wild horse and burro interest groups; Category III includes state, county or locally elected office-holders, employee of a State agency responsible for the management of natural resources, Indian tribes within or adjacent to the area for which the RAC is organized, are employed as academicians in natural resource management or the natural sciences or represent the public-at-large.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The SW RAC meet once in FY2020.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Southwest RAC provides the BLM an additional source of expertise from a wide variety of backgrounds from members and others who have a high interest in public land resources and their management. The RAC has demonstrated a willingness to solve problems and work on the basis of consensus and collaboration. The BLM is provided with a source of accurate and timely information and recommendations from a group of individuals keenly aware of their constituents' viewpoints.
Why close or partially close meetings?All meetings are open to the public. Notices of the meetings are published in the Federal Register, posted on the BLM Colorado website, and distributed to local newspapers.
Recommendation RemarksThe SW RAC met once and made 2 recommendations in FY2020. The RAC’s 2 recommendations are (1) to increase the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument entrance fees for the Visitor Center and Museum and (2) to charge these entrance fees year-round rather than only from March 1 through Oct. 31.
