How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Board shall provide independent advice and recommendations on matters pertaining to the Marine Corps University (“the University”), as set forth in paragraph four of the BOV Charter:
Description of Duties: The Board, pursuant to 10 U.S.C. § 8592(d), shall provide the Secretary of Defense and/or the Deputy Secretary of Defense, through the Secretary of the Navy, independent advice and recommendations on matters pertaining to:
a. U.S. Marine Corps Professional Military Education;
b. all aspects of the academic and administrative policies of the University;
c. higher educational standards and cost effective operations of the University; and
d. the operation and accreditation of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
How is membership balanced?*The members shall be eminent authorities in the fields of education, defense, management, economics, leadership, academia, national military strategy, or international affairs. The President of the University shall serve as a non-voting, ex-officio regular government employee member of the Board, whose membership shall not count toward the total membership of the Board.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The BOV Charter requires one meeting each year; however, the Board generally meets twice each year with Administrative and Preparatory Meetings being held as deemed necessary by the Designated Federal Officer, in consultation President of Marine Corps University , the Commanding General of Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and the Board's President. The meetings are necessary and relevant to the operation of the University's educational and research programs and to the achievement of regional accreditation, as required by statute.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Statute mandates the Board as a requirement for regional accreditation. The Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the University's regional accrediting agency, mandates the existence of such a board. The members of the Board provide advice and recommendations based on their diversity as evidenced in their occupations, educational credentials and backgrounds, and career work experiences. Civilian and military members of the University do not possess this diversity and are unable to lend these varied experiences.
Why close or partially close meetings?The Board of Visitors of Marine Corps University has never conducted a closed meeting.
