How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The NASA Advisory Council (NAC) is one of two principal Agency advisory committees that report directly to the NASA Administrator. The most recent Council major reorganization took place during FY 2014. The Council is currently comprised of six committees: Aeronautics; Human Exploration and Operations; Science; STEM Engagement; Technology, Innovation and Engineering; and Regulatory and Policy The Council typically holds three meetings per year. During Council meetings, the members receive regular and special topic briefings from the Agency leadership, and reports from the Council's six committees covering the breadth of NASA programs, projects, policies and plans. The Council develops findings and recommendations for the NASA Administrator, and deliberates in meetings open to the public. Approved Council findings and recommendations are then transmitted either to: (a) the NASA Administrator, in the case of agency-wide recommendations; or (b) the appropriate Associate Administrator, in the case of specific program/project-related recommendations. The NASA Administrator or appropriate Associate Administrator carefully considers each recommendation and responds back to the Council with written feedback. In addition to the Council DFO and Committee DFOs, the NAC is supported by contractor personnel for meetings, travel and logistics as noted under "other costs."
How is membership balanced?*Members of the Council are selected for their subject-expertise in the areas of the six committees, and as members-at-large for broader, strategic perspectives. Members come from government, academia, and private industry. In addition, the Council has two ex officio members representing the National Academy of Sciences (Chair, Space Studies Board) and the National Academy of Engineering (Chair, Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board).
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Council typically meets three times per year. The NASA Administrator (or designee) participates in the Council meetings.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Council is unique in that it is the only NASA Federal advisory committee that produces findings and recommendations across the broad range of Agency programs, projects, policies and plans.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
