How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*(A) To provide advice to the Secretary on the development and implementation of activities under Subtitle J of the Energy Policy Act, Public Law No. 109-58, related to unconventional natural gas and other petroleum resources; and (B) provide to the Secretary written comments regarding the draft annual plan that is required by Section 999B(e) of the Energy Policy Act. The duties of the Committee are solely advisory in nature.
How is membership balanced?*Membership requirements are stated in Section 999D(b)(2): a majority of members who are employees or representatives of independent producers of natural gas and other petroleum, including small producers; individuals with extensive research experience or operational knowledge of unconventional natural gas and other petroleum resource exploration and production; individuals broadly representative of the affected interests in unconventional natural gas and other petroleum resource exploration and production, including interests in environmental protection and safe operations; individuals with expertise in the various geographic areas of potential supply of unconventional onshore natural gas and other petroleum resources in the United States.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee held 2 meetings to develop recommendations for its 2014 Annual Plan.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*According to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 Section 999B, the Secretary of Energy is directed to establish this Committee to administer research, development, demonstration and commercial activities related to ultra-deepwater and unconventional onshore natural gas and other petroleum resources.

The Committee supports Goal 1.1 of the agency's strategic plan by advising the Secretary on the development and implementation of programs under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
