How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Asian Advisory Committee accomplished its objectives by using its diverse ethnic representation to advise the Census Bureau on ways it can best enumerate the Asian population and provide quality, accurate data regarding the Asian population. The Committee advised the Census Bureau on several issues pertaining to the 2010 Census including privacy and confidentiality, language, outreach, education and promotion. The Advisory Committee also utilized its extensive expertise in statistics, demography, geography and other core disciplines of the Census Bureau to provide advice on a number of decennial planning issues.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee's charter provided for nine members. The Committee comprised public and private sector representatives, academia, and representatives of Asian-serving, community-based organizations. The Committee provided geographic and ethnic balance, representing Asian communities across the country.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee generally met twice a year. The meetings were relevant to Census oversight entities, the public and Census stakeholders. The meetings gave the public an opportunity to observe and gain insight into the decennial planning process, particularly as it strives to obtain an accurate count of undercounted populations such as the Asian community.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee's expertise, ethnic and geographic diversity are not to be found in any other Commerce component. Its work has been beneficial in helping the Census Bureau provide an open channel of communication with the Asian population, with the specific goal of reducing the differential undercount of this population.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksThe Committee provided substantive recommendations regarding the 2010 Census Language program, partnership and outreach activities geared toward Asian communities, and 2010 Census Communications plans for Asian audiences, including radio and television ads, in-language materials, toolkits, posters and other promotional merchandise.
