Legislation Status
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Board's accomplishments directly contribute to the academic and professional credibility of the Naval War College. These contributions center on means to maintain a distinguished academic program, quality faculty, and curriculum, research and war gaming relevance.
How is membership balanced?*The Board consists of up to ten members appointed for up to four-year terms who are eminent present or former leaders in education, finance, industry, international relations, public affairs and national defense.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Board meets once or twice per year, at the discretion of the President of the Naval War College to review Naval War College programs and to advise the College President. Collectively and individually, the Board, because it includes individuals of stature from a wide spectrum of expertise, is able to assist the Naval War College through offering both specific and general counsel.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Through its activities, the array of represented disciplines, and the status and experience of its members, the Board provides an independent and informed perspective on Naval War College programs and connectivity to other centers of similar intellectual endeavors. Continuation of the Board is essential in that it is integral to the maintenance of the College's academic and professional credentials. Naval War College's degree-granting authority includes a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. Similar arrangements at the other service war colleges exist to support accreditation, especially desirable for the granting of Master's degrees.
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings are not closed to the public unless the Department of Defense determines that items on the planned agenda meet the closed meeting provisions of 5 U.S.C. § 552b(c). Pursuant to DoD policy closed meetings can only be authorized by the DoD Sponsor, who is the Secretary of the Navy or designee, and only after consultation with the appropriate General Counsel.
Recommendation RemarksThe committee has not been populated since fiscal year 2006 and has not held a meeting since March 18, 2005. Accordingly, the Department of Defense is terminating the committee.
