Legislation Status
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Allegheny National Wild and Scenic River Southern Advisory Council assisted with public involvement and coordination with other agencies during the development of the River Management Plan (RMP). The RMP was approved on 1/2/97.This committee was made administratively inactive in January 2007.
How is membership balanced?*Inactive
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Inactive
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Most recommendations in the RMP involve lands outside the jurisdiction of the federal government (i.e. private and State-administered lands and programs). Implementation of recommendations in the RMP are therefore more dependent on local citizen/government initiative than Federal actions. It therefore has been concluded by all former advisory council members that a less structured and more flexible citizen-initiated process is appropriate to implement the RMP. One support group has been formed by the Venango Museum to assist with implementation of management recommendations along the W&SR in Venango County. Citizen interest has been expressed in forming a similar grass roots effort for the southern W&SR segments. During 2003 the Northern Allegheny Project (NAP) committed to a challange cost share to assist the Forest Service with Section 7 permitting issues and citizen involvement. This partnership has expedited the section 7 process and improved community relations. In 2007, not considered necessary; inactive.
Why close or partially close meetings? These meetings are not closed meetings. (See Charter)
Recommendation RemarksThe Advisory Council was active until 4/22/96 when the planning stage was completed. The council has not met since that time, and has essentially dissolved. According to its authorizing legislation, the council terminates 10 years following the Secretary's approval of the river management plan.
