How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The scope and objectives of the Resource Advisory Committees of the Alaska Region are to implement Title II provisions of Public Law 106-393, Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000. The duties and responsibilities of the committee are to solicit, review, and recommend projects to the Secretary on the Tongass National Forest, using Title II funds the boroughs set aside for this purpose.
How is membership balanced?*The membership of the RAC is made up of a broad representation of community interests mentioned in the Act. These groups include persons who represent organized labor; developed outdoor recreation, off-highway vehicle users, or commercial recreation activities; energy and mineral development interests; commercial timber industry; hold Federal grazing permits or other land use permits; nationally and regionally or locally recognized environmental organizations, dispersed recreational activities; archaeological and historical interest; nationally or regionally recognized wild horse and burro interests groups; hold state-elected office or their designee; hold county- or local- elected office; represent American Indian tribes; school officials or teachers; and represent the affected public-at-large.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*There have been a total of twelve RAC meetings in the Alaska region. Each of the three active RACS had four meetings, approximately every other month during the winter and spring. The meetings focused on RAC business related to project solicitation and proposed project review and were relevant.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This committee is essential because Public Law 106-393 requires public representatives from a cross section of interests in the local area to fulfill the mandate of the legislation. No such advisory group with the required broad variety of interests currently exists in these areas in the Alaska Region.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksSecretariat advised termination due to lapsed legislation. Agency may bring this committee back on its own authority if legislation is not forthcoming.

Agency Feedback Comment*The agency provides feedback by involving the RAC in monitoring the implementation of the recommended projects.Narrative Description*This Resource Advisory Committee (RAC)is mandated by Congress, under section 205 of PL 106-393, the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000. The Committee was established for two purposes: (1) to improve collaborative relationships among the people who use and care for the National Forests and the Forest Service, which manages the lands; and(2) to provide advice and recommendations to the Forest Service in identifying and implementing broadly supported land management projects that maintain existing infrastructure, enhance forest ecosystems, and improve land health and water quality. The RAC directly supports the agency's mission goal for ecosystem health: to Promote ecosystem health and conservation using a collaborative apporach to sustain the Nations's forests, grasslands, and watersheds.
