How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Meetings of the Committee are scheduled by the Committee co-chairs, as required to address NSLRSDA topics. The NSLRSDA Manager / DFO will be responsible for bringing to the attention of the NSLRSDA co-chairs topics and issues related to NSLRSDA that require Committee attention. This Committee was given the charge by USGS to address the topics of the implications of the soon-to-be-released National Space Policy and the Depratment of Homeland Security, interactions with private industry, and a possible data gap in the Landsat continuity of imagery. The NSLRSDA Archive Manager / DFO is responsible for providing the mechanism by which Committee advice and guidance are communicated to the appropriate and responsible DOI/USGS organizations. The Committee will prepare formal activity and status reports to the Secretary of the Interior and USGS, as appropriate.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee initially will be composed of: Two members representing the interests of academia: A laboratory researcher-data user and a classroom educator-data user. Four members from government: Two Federal data users and two State/local data users. Four members representing the interests of industry: Two licensed data providers; one value-added industry provider, and one commercial industry provider, Five others: Five individuals from any sector to represent a specified interest, which may include the public at-large.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee meets twice a year. The meetings are highly relevant given the planned influx of enormous volumes of data from the Earth Observing Systems (EOS) data, which were launched in 1999 as well as the multiple non-USA launches of land-related instruments. The Committee have provided numerous recommendations which are viewable at
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is necessary to provide guidance to the USGS as it relates to the scientific value, the criteria used to appraise, and the areas to concentrate on to ensure that the NSLRSDA is best serving and preserving the Nation's land remote sensing needs. An advisory process is indicated in the Land Remote Sensing Policy Act of 1992 (15 USC 5652, SEC. 502. Archiving of Data. c.3): In determing the initial content of, or in upgrading, the basic data set, the Secretary of Interior shall --(3) consult with and seek the advice of users and producers of remote sensing data and data products.
Why close or partially close meetings? All meetings are open and we have occassionally received public input from those attending a public meeting.
Recommendation RemarksAll Committee reports can be found at

Specific recommendations related to Landsat, LDCM, and FLI were created by the Committee and sent to the Department of the Interior Secretary. They can be found under "Work Products" from the URL above. The recommednations made by this Committee over the three periods chartered have provided the DoI and USGS with valuable advice and guidance in adminsitering this legislated satellite archive containing reocrds of the globe.
