How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Through the Committee's open meetings, a public forum was provided through which the park issues and updates were disseminated and public comments were heard for consideration by the Committee in its deliberations and formulation of advice and recommendations.
How is membership balanced?*Membership has been as prescribed by the Commission's enabling legislation, consisting of 15 members appointed by the Secretary of the Interior as follows: (a) one member representing departments or agencies of the United States administering lands affected by the recreation area, appointed from among nominations of the heads of such departments or agencies; (b) two members representing the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, apppointed from nominations of the Governor of the State of West Virginia; (c) one member representing the West Virginia Department of Commerce, appointed from among nominations of the Governor of West Virginia; (d) three members representing the commercial whitewater rafting industry in West Virgnia; (e) one member representing non-commercial whitewater boating organizations; (f) one member representing conservation organizations in West Virginia; (g) one member representing individuals engaged in game fishing in West Virginia; (h) one member representing the Nicholas County Chamber of Commerce; (i) one member representing the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce; (j) one member representing recreational users of Summersville Lake; and (k) two members representing local citizens or citizens groups which are concerned with the Gauley River or own lands included within the boundaries of the recreation area.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee has fulfilled its legislated purpose, and terminated October 26, 1998, pursuant to Public Law 100-534. No meetings were held in 1999.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Gauley River National Recreation Area Advisory Committee was established by the Congress to advise the Secretary of the Interior on matters relating to the development of a management plan for the recreation area and on implementation of such plan.
Why close or partially close meetings?All meetings of the Commission were open.
Recommendation Remarks(1) Re #6 (EXPECTED CHARTER RENEWAL DATE) -- Pursuant to the Committee's enabling legislation, the Federal Advisory Committee Act, Section 14(b) biennial rechartering requirement was waived for the Committee.
(2) Re MEMBERSHIP -- Pursuant to the Committee's enabling legislation, members continued to serve after the expiration of their terms until successors were appointed.
(3) TERMINATION -- Pursuant to Public Law 10-534, the Gauley River National Recreation Area Advisory Committtee terminated October 26, 1998.
